During lfr/norm/heroic we essentially burn through Gul'dan and reunite Illidan's soul with his body, done deal.

During mythic, when Khadgar initially attempts to do the fusion, he does it too early, resulting in Illidan become active under the will of Sargeras. So you have to temporarily hold off the assault from the Sargeras-infused Illidan who probably screams about the void and all the reasons Sargeras has for eliminating all life, until you can remove his control and finish Khadgar's spell.

Then you finish off Gul'dan and the ending cinematic makes more sense because he had everything in his grasp and Sargeras was in control, and then we took it from him.
